What's wrong with plagiarism?

About the article:

The article was written in 1997-2001, and published in Citizen designer: Perspective on Design Responsibility, By Steven Heller & Veronique Vienne in 2003.
The article was written when the author sent a survey of only two questions: what does plagiarism means?, and what’s wrong with plagiarism?
Although he got enough answers from at least one person but he did not believe that artists and designers have good answers to these two questions.
Plagiarism a particular form of theft.

How is it relevant now?
Plagiarism and the internet
The Internet now makes it easy to find thousands of relevant sources in seconds.
in the space of a few minutes plagiarists can find, copy, and paste together an entire term paper or essay or even any artwork because much of the material online is produced by other students.
It is often difficult or impossible for educators to identify plagiarism based on expectations of student-level work.
It is simple to save a web page designed by someone else and use it as your own.
•Adding copyrights to images can help, but it is impossible to know who has taken your things unless you are constantly looking for them.
Many users are unaware of copyright laws and that they are violating them by using your work.
A simple email after looking up the site owner is usually enough to deter them.
Plagiarists can download graphics with a click of the mouse.

How is it relevant in Saudi Arabia?
All countries have some form of plagiarism policies, however no two countries have the exact same plagiarism laws and some countries are worlds apart in how they deal with plagiarism.
Up until now here in KSA there are no rule against plagiarism and designers didn’t have any rights to protect their work from stealingKSA more than 10 years ago agreed to follow the rules of plagiarism so any designer can protect his work now but it’s still not strictly applied.

Local Examples:

We showed an example that happened to me when i designed a logo 3 years ago to a photography group and then a university plagiarized it for their photography exhibition:

Beyond Pro Bono

Thesis:
A Designer should consider his background, his social background and his knowledge to learn how to look at things critically.
•The article was published in Citizen designer: Perspective on Design Responsibility, By Steven Heller & Veronique Vienne in 2003.

•A designer is not only a communicator, a designer should understand each element he/she is putting in a poster because sending messages especially when it comes to social responsibility posters is an art that has a silent voice that only the target audience can hear and the designer should take into consideration the background of the target audience.
•Graphic design is all about teaching students critical thinking and how to ask critical questions about their profession and as it’s written “ responsibility is the ability to respond it’s not just the willingness to act, but also the ability to understand one’s action”, and teaching this ability would teach a critical awareness.

•And the reason behind writing the article is for every graphic designer to understand that having a critical vision and a critical analysis is a very important rule in being a designer.

•Anne has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants.

How is it Relevance Now?

Using a cultural figure to represent a subject or a country was there through history of design and its still used until today. It either send a positive or a negative message to the viewer depending on the background of the audience. Its related to  how more than one reacts not only one point of view.

- The First things first manifesto
First Things First 2000 had a simple aim. It was made to provoke debate. Lulled by the economic boom, design has shown little inclination of late to consider first principles. It was said that if designers gave it a big enough push – high-profile signatories, co-publication in several magazines – it stood a good chance of grabbing attention.

This poster was designed for the new liberal party in Colombia, the poster shows the Colombian flag and the images of candidates past and present, and the aim of the candidate raised in a shape also the typography every part understood the poster on their way, for example: in Latin America people tended to support the campaign than the working classes, because they agents the modernism and the poster was shows the modernization. This depends in the history, education and the background of the audience and their culture.

This is a poster campaign developed by the Mexican government. The goal of the  government campaign was to provide information about health and nutrition to the community. The poster shows a single black and white image of a smiling boy wearing the dress and standing alone; this poster posted in the local health clinics, on tress and lampposts. The audience didn’t understand it as it spouse it be, for example the people of the village couldn’t understand why the boy he had been left alone and why he is smiling the camera while he is alone.
